Published on ReluctantPickle.com – For the confused, the conflicted, and the chronically unqualified to make the call.
🚨 The Situation:
You’re in a tight game.
No crowd. No ref.
Just you, your friend, a line call…
…and the silent pressure of someone who drove you here.
So… who wins?
🎾 1. The Correct Answer
Technically: the team that didn’t hit the ball last makes the call.
That’s right — your opponent decides if it was in or out.
😅 So if your best friend is feeling salty about that third-shot dink you just barely pulled off?
Yeah, good luck.
🫣 2. The Real-World Answer
Let’s be honest:
- 80% of the time, you say “Let’s replay it.”
- 15% of the time, someone grumbles and plays on.
- 5% of the time, someone rage-quits, and the other person quietly claims victory in their soul.
🤝 3. When “Let’s Replay It” Actually Means “I Know I Lost”
Let’s not kid ourselves.
If you ever say:
“I’m not sure. Wanna replay it?”
…you definitely know it was out.
We all know.
Even Barb three courts over knows.
🧠 4. The Pickleball Rulebook Says:
“When no referee is present, players are responsible for making all line calls on their side of the court.”
Translation: Your friend is now the most biased ref in sports history.
😐 5. So What’s the Right Thing To Do?
If you’re the one making the call:
👉 Be honest — but if you’re not sure, it’s in.
If you’re on the receiving end:
👉 Smile. Breathe. Say “Nice shot.” Even if you want to throw your paddle across the kitchen.
🏆 6. Who Actually Wins?
No one.
Except maybe the person who didn’t drive.
